Growing conditions so far have been close to perfect for our 2014 vintages - warm to very warm days and cool Megalong Valley night time temperatures mean that our whole vineyard is slightly ahead of normal growth trends. Following a very dry spring, we have had intermittent rain falls virtually eliminating any possible threat of disease in the vineyard and allowing for minimal fungicide spraying.
Whilst the bush fires blazed not far from the vineyard in October, ironically we suffered a small amount of frost damage to our Block 1 Riesling, used to make our flagship Blue Mountains Wine. However on the bright-side, we came off well compared to some other parts of NSW. Canberra and Southern areas of NSW suffered big crop losses as did the Riverina and areas in the central tablelands. For an interesting article on the extent of the damage to these wine regions click here.
We are now well and truly in to the growing season and have reached bunch closure in both of our Riesling blocks. We have now been busy thinning out the large amount of fruit from the vines meaning dropping about 40% of the crop. The result is a yield of approximately 10 tonne per hectare which produces fruit of very high quality but low yield.
Our newly grafted Tempranillo block appears to be bearing more fruit than we originally expected and is living up to its reputation as an early ripening variety as we have now reached veraison which is the stage in the growing cycle where the fruit begins to turn red. What this means is that we will likely be harvesting in early to mid February providing lots of time to ripen and in turn to create a big, full bodied red wine.
Our Cabernet block is looking fantastic with a naturally low yield per hectare and is on track to be the latest variety to harvest in mid to late April.
